In the early morning of June 2, 2024, officers responded to reports of a shooting on the 19700 block of North Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg, Maryland. At about 5:11 a.m., a man was found with an apparent gunshot wound and taken to a nearby hospital. He was identified as 30-year-old Ange Gadji and later died; an autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound and the case was ruled a homicide.

Montgomery County detectives from the Major Crimes Division led the investigation and asked the community for information, offering a possible cash reward for useful tips. Within days, investigators identified 39-year-old Anthony Blackford as the primary suspect. An arrest warrant was issued and Blackford was arrested on June 4, 2024; he was charged with Gadji’s murder and held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit.
