A dispute between friends in Temple Hills, Maryland, ended in the death of 40-year-old Andrew Carnell Washington in the early morning of February 10, 2024. Washington, a Black man from Washington, D.C., was known in the local basketball community as SpongeBob and for his play at the University of Delaware and in other tournaments. He was found inside a parked car in the 2400 block of Iverson Street with multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prince George’s County Police arrived around 4:05 a.m. after a shooting was reported. Officers first encountered 36-year-old Estep Kyler Jr. of Largo nearby with a gunshot wound; Kyler told police he had been in an altercation with Washington while they were sitting in a vehicle. Investigators say Kyler allegedly shot Washington and also sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound; his injuries were not considered life-threatening and he was taken to a hospital. Kyler has been charged with first- and second-degree murder and related offenses, and authorities said he would be transferred to the Department of Corrections after hospital release.

Washington’s family and the local basketball community have mourned his death and remembered his mentoring of young athletes. Did anyone in the Temple Hills area see or hear anything that morning that could help piece together what happened?
