Russell Lanning, 43, was found dismembered along Alligator Alley on November 11, 1990. Several dismembered parts were recovered between mile markers 16 and 17 in the Big Cypress National Preserve, a remote stretch of I-75 between Naples and Fort Lauderdale. The remains were discovered by a passerby in a desolate, swampy area where wildlife and terrain complicated recovery and forensic work.
Lanning had reportedly been last seen days before his body was found. His identity was established only after forensic analysis and DNA comparison. The way the body was disposed of suggested an effort to hinder identification and delay law enforcement. Investigators faced limited witnesses and difficult conditions in the Everglades, and concrete leads were hard to develop.
If anyone knew Russell, saw him in early November 1990, or has information about activity along Alligator Alley near mile markers 16–17, please come forward.
