Seventeen-year-old Rajon Lateef Jackson III, a Westlake High School student, was fatally shot while walking home in Waldorf, Maryland. On the afternoon of January 13, 2023, as he passed through the Dorchester Circle and Harvest Fish Place area after getting off his school bus, a car approached and its occupant called out to him. The driver, identified as 18-year-old acquaintance Elijah Bernard Barnes, opened fire, striking Jackson multiple times in the face and neck. First responders found Jackson critically wounded; he was taken to a hospital and died early the next morning, January 14, 2023.

Investigators used surveillance footage to place Barnes and his older model silver Toyota Corolla, missing a front driver’s side hubcap, near the scene shortly before the shooting. A witness later identified Barnes as the person who called Jackson to the vehicle and shot him. Barnes left Maryland after the murder but was located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and arrested there on January 18, 2023, then brought back to Maryland to face charges.
