OK Sun Kim West was a 20-year-old Korean immigrant and mother of two who worked as a waitress at the House of Chan. Recently divorced from a US Air Force service member, she was part of a Korean community in Callaway, Florida. Little else is known publicly about her life before the killing.
On the morning of March 29, 1982, her trailer in Callaway caught fire. After the blaze was put out, firefighters found OK Sun’s body on a living-room couch; the couch was soaked in blood and her throat had been slit. Investigators estimated she was killed at about 5:00 a.m. A newspaper delivery man reported seeing a white van parked just outside the trailer park, and footprints led from the park toward where the van would have been.
Police immediately focused on her ex-husband, James West. He said he was at work by 5:45 a.m., earlier than his usual time; his van resembled the one the delivery man described, he told investigators he owned no sneakers, and a polygraph was inconclusive. Investigators have also considered James’s new wife, Monica, a former friend of OK Sun. The case remains cold and unsolved.
If anyone knew OK Sun, her movements that night, or has information about the white van or footprints, please contact Panhandle Crime Stoppers or the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
