Tyler Louis Johnson was 15 when he was shot in the head during a sleepover at the Westin Hotel in Southfield, Michigan. The shooting occurred on February 11, 2024; Tyler was taken to a local hospital, placed on life support, and died a few days later.

Five teenagers had been in the hotel room, which had been rented by one teen’s uncle. Officers detained two youths near an elevator; a 15-year-old was found with two handguns, and ballistics linked one of those weapons to the fatal shot. Investigators also recovered a spent shell casing, marijuana, psychedelic mushrooms, and a scale in the room. That teen was charged with carrying concealed weapons but not with the homicide and was later released.

Police say they have physical and circumstantial evidence and believe they know who fired the gun, but prosecution requires eyewitness testimony. The four other teens from the room have all retained attorneys and declined to speak, leaving the investigation stalled. Tyler’s mother has publicly called for answers, and Crime Stoppers has offered a reward. If anyone has information about who fired the shot or what happened in that hotel room, please share it with Southfield police or Crime Stoppers.
