A routine checkpoint in Summit, Mississippi, turned deadly on the evening of August 8, 2024, when 52-year-old Summit Police Department officer Troy Lamar Floyd, Sr. was shot and killed while on duty. Floyd had more than two decades in law enforcement, serving as a jailer, patrol officer, and parole agent with agencies including the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and the Mississippi Department of Corrections before joining Summit PD.

The shooting occurred as a vehicle approached a checkpoint near West Railroad Avenue and a passenger, later identified as 25-year-old Usher Leonard, opened fire. Officer Floyd died from his wounds. McComb officers responding to the scene located the suspect at a nearby grocery store; an exchange of gunfire there wounded two McComb officers, Tyler Harvey and Joey Roberts, and the suspect was shot and killed at the scene. Leonard had an outstanding warrant and had violated terms of post-release supervision related to a 2018 burglary conviction. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the inquiry.

Did anyone in the Summit or McComb area see the vehicle or events that evening and can provide information?
