Romero Eleregus Hampton Jr., 21, a former football player, was fatally shot at Hilldale Apartments on Monument Drive in Tupelo, Mississippi on the night of July 29, 2024. Residents reported hearing gunfire around 10:30 p.m.; witnesses found Hampton suffering from gunshot wounds and he was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Tupelo Police detectives and U.S. Marshals pursued leads and identified a suspect within days. On August 1, 2024, 22-year-old Makaiyah Woods was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. At his initial court appearance Woods reportedly had a towel over his head and spat during the proceeding; it was revealed he was on probation at the time. Bond was denied and he remained in custody. Investigators had not publicly disclosed a motive for the shooting.
If anyone has information about Hampton, his last movements that night, or the events at Hilldale Apartments, please come forward.
