On the night of February 25, 2024, a dispute over a dice game in the Countryside Club parking lot on Sturgis Road north of Louisville, Winston County, Mississippi, ended in gunfire that killed 27-year-old Gabriel DeShun Gale. Gale, a Black male, was shot during the altercation and taken by private vehicle to a local hospital, where he died.

Investigators identified and arrested 30-year-old Aaron Smith of Kosciusko in connection with the shooting. The Winston County Sheriff’s Department says Smith was reportedly trying to shoot another person when a bullet struck Gale; Smith was charged with murder and held on $150,000 bond.

Gale was born March 21, 1996, in Oktibbeha County and was father to two children, Khambella and Khegan Gale. His funeral was held March 17, 2024, at Beck Funeral Home in Louisville, and he was buried at New Zion Church Cemetery.
