James Gabriel ’Gabe’ Tipton, 22, of Aberdeen, Mississippi, was shot and killed around midnight on January 20, 2024, while a passenger in the backseat of a pickup truck traveling east on Highway 82 near Starkville. There were three people in the vehicle. After the shot, the driver stopped and began to render aid along with another passenger while Miller allegedly took control of the truck and fled. Tipton was found deceased on the side of Highway 82; the Oktibbeha County coroner is investigating his death as a homicide and his body was sent to the state medical examiner for autopsy.

Law enforcement located and arrested Daniel Miller in Pickens County, Alabama; he was extradited to Mississippi and charged with first-degree murder. An Oktibbeha County grand jury returned an indictment in October 2024 and the case is now in the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Gabe Tipton was a 2020 graduate of Hamilton High School and worked for C‑Spire Telecommunications; friends remember his bright smile, sense of humor, and love of video games and sports.
