Ayairia Anderson was 21 and eight months pregnant when she was shot while driving near Interstate 220 on Industrial Park Drive in Jackson, Mississippi, in the early morning hours of June 11, 2023. She had been at a restaurant and bar with friends; after a reported fight at the establishment the group left in Anderson’s black Nissan Altima. Witnesses with her said gunfire struck her head and leg, causing her to lose control and crash into an overpass.

Paramedics rushed Anderson to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where doctors performed an emergency C-section. Neither Anderson nor her unborn son, named Jadari Jakai Davis, survived. The Jackson Police Department is investigating the shooting as a double homicide. Two brothers, Jashantes and Jamarquez McClendon, were arrested and charged with multiple offenses including two counts of murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and drive-by shooting; a judge denied bond for both. One defense attorney said the brothers were in separate vehicles and did not have the type of weapon used.
