Cornelius McGee Jr., a 15-year-old from Clarksdale, Mississippi, was fatally shot on the afternoon of May 22, 2023, at about 4:30 p.m. at a home on West Second Street owned by former Clarksdale police officer Andrew Bankhead. Responding officers found Cornelius deceased after a call reporting a residential burglary. Two sharply different accounts of what happened have been given. Cornelius’s mother, Jacqueline Rash, says he was visiting Bankhead’s daughter and tried to flee when discovered, and that Bankhead shot him in the back as he climbed a fence.
Bankhead’s family says security footage shows someone entering the house by pushing an air conditioning unit through a window, that Bankhead was in the shower when he heard a noise, and that he does not have a 15-year-old daughter — portraying the shooting as a homeowner defending the property. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation took over the inquiry and has said the shooting is not an officer-involved incident because Bankhead had resigned before the shooting. No arrests have been announced and the MBI describes the investigation as ongoing.
Is there anyone who saw or has footage from West Second Street that afternoon?
