On the evening of April 15, 2023, at about 8:30 p.m., gunfire was reported on the 100 block of Briarfield Avenue in Biloxi, Mississippi. Officers responding found 25-year-old Biloxi resident Devodrick Tyreone Brister suffering multiple gunshot wounds; he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. Friends described Brister as outgoing and generous.

Witnesses at the scene identified a suspect, and police located a man at a nearby residence. Thirty-year-old James Tarvis McMorris Jr. of Harvey, Louisiana, was arrested and charged with manslaughter in connection with Brister’s death. He was booked into the Harrison County Adult Detention Center, and a Justice Court Judge set bond at $500,000. The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is ongoing.
