On February 17, 2023, 73-year-old George Auston McCain was killed in a shooting spree that swept through Tate County, Mississippi. McCain, a Ford Motor Company retiree known as Uncle George and remembered as an avid outdoorsman and family man, was one of six people killed that day; the other victims were Charles Manuel, 76; Chris Eugene Boyce, 59; Debra Sue Crum, 60; John Rocky Rorie, 59; and Lynda McCain, 78.
Victims were found at a convenience store and in separate homes as a lone gunman carried out the attacks across multiple locations in the rural Arkabutla area. Law enforcement quickly arrested a local man identified as the alleged shooter, who was reported to be the ex-husband of one of the victims.
Few details about motive have been released; anyone who knew George or has information about that day is asked to come forward.
