On the night of October 23, 2024, 18-year-old DaRhon Brooks of Beaufort was fatally shot while riding in a vehicle near the intersection of Parris Island Gateway and Trask Parkway in Burton, South Carolina. The vehicle, carrying Brooks and two others, was struck by gunfire and the driver fled toward Beaufort Memorial Hospital. About three miles from the shooting scene the car crashed in the 800 block of Ribaut Road and caught fire.

Responders found Brooks and another 18-year-old, Ashi Mitchell, dead of gunshot wounds; a third occupant was injured and taken to hospital. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office says investigators placed at least a dozen evidence markers at the original shooting site, and they note this was the third vehicle-targeted shooting in the area in less than a week. No suspects have been publicly identified or arrested and the case remains under investigation.

If anyone has information about the shooting, the vehicle involved, or the events that led up to that night, please contact the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
