A 16-year-old boy from Hampton, Georgia, named Jayvion Jones was killed in a shooting on the evening of September 3, 2024, in Dalzell, South Carolina. Jones was one of six juveniles inside a vehicle at the intersection of Black River Road and Edens Road when the car was struck by gunfire; deputies found his body inside the vehicle about 8:30 p.m. Another 16-year-old passenger was wounded and expected to recover.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office identified two suspects. On September 11 a 17-year-old, Jonathan Brown of Dalzell, was arrested; a search of his home reportedly turned up fentanyl and a stolen pistol. He was initially booked on drug and weapons charges and subsequently charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, possession of a stolen pistol, possession of a firearm by a person under 18, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. A second arrest came September 27 when 19-year-old Henry Jahlil Brown of Sumter was charged with murder, five counts of attempted murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Both were taken to the county detention center. The motive has not been released and the investigation is ongoing.
If anyone has information about the shooting, who was in the vehicle that night, or events leading up to it, please share tips with investigators.
