Shortly after 4:30 a.m. on August 18, 2024, gunfire broke out outside the Sleep Inn on Broad Street in Sumter, South Carolina. Officers who responded found the bodies of 19-year-old Demari Tyriq Spann and 20-year-old Saquan Logan, both Sumter residents, each with fatal gunshot wounds. The hotel exterior showed bullet holes and shattered glass.
Investigators identified two suspects from Wedgefield. On August 27, 2024, 23-year-old Toney Williams Jr. was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder, accused of helping the primary suspect evade police and conceal evidence. The man believed to be the shooter, 19-year-old Tavion Melki Mickens, was detained in a Georgia jail on unrelated charges and later returned to Sumter; he has been charged with two counts of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The Sumter Police Department has continued the investigation and offered a reward for information leading to further arrests.
If anyone knew Demari Spann or has information about the shooting, please share what you know.
