In the early morning hours of August 18, 2024, two men were found fatally shot outside the Sleep Inn on Broad Street in Sumter, South Carolina. One victim was identified as 20-year-old Saquan Logan of Sumter; the other was 19-year-old Tyriq Demari Spann of Dalzell. The Sumter County Coroner’s Office confirmed their identities and autopsies were scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Sumter police identified two suspects from Wedgefield. Nineteen-year-old Tavion Melki Mickens was charged with two counts of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime; he was located in a Georgia jail on unrelated charges and extradited to Sumter on September 7, 2024. A second suspect, 23-year-old Toney Williams Jr., was arrested on August 27, 2024, and charged with accessory after the fact, accused of helping Mickens hide evidence and evade law enforcement. Witnesses described hearing gunshots and people fleeing, and the Sumter Police Department has offered a reward for information leading to further arrests.

Saquan’s family said he wasn’t a troublemaker, that he worked and played video games, and that his mother suffered another recent loss when a different son was killed less than a year earlier. Does anyone have information about Saquan’s movements that morning or saw activity near the Sleep Inn around 4:30 a.m. on August 18, 2024?
