Joe Stacy, 52, was found dead on the kitchen floor of his Restful Lane home near Conway, South Carolina, on the afternoon of June 17, 2024. His sister discovered him as the family was preparing to attend a relative’s funeral. An autopsy determined he died from a single gunshot wound to the back of his head, and the Horry County Police Department opened a homicide investigation.

The only other person in the house when officers arrived was Stacy’s 22-year-old stepson, Tyler Mitchell Denno. Investigators arrested Denno and recovered a handgun from a safe in his bedroom; ballistic testing matched shell casings from the scene to that firearm. Officers also found marijuana, scales, and packaging bags in the room. Denno was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and a drug manufacturing charge and was held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

In September 2024 Denno’s mother, Brandy Stacy, testified at a bond hearing that she feared for her other sons and alleged Denno had hit and threatened to kill her on the day of the killing; the judge denied bond. In January 2025 the defense requested a mental health evaluation and a judge ordered Denno evaluated at the Medical University of South Carolina, pausing the murder proceedings pending the evaluation results.
