In the early hours of May 12, 2024, a shooting on Evans Court just outside Mullins, South Carolina, left 29-year-old Devante Marquise Legette dead. The shooting happened at about 5 a.m. and also wounded two other people, who were taken by private vehicles to the MUSC Marion Emergency Department and were expected to survive. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has not identified suspects or announced arrests; investigators describe the probe as very active and have asked anyone with information to come forward.

Legette had pending legal issues at the time of his death: he faced murder and other charges in the October 2023 death of James Cross Jr., charges that were dismissed on May 13, 2024, following Legette’s death. He had earlier pleaded guilty in a 2017 case to first-degree assault and battery after an initial attempted murder charge and served a five-year sentence. If anyone has information about the May 12 shooting on Evans Court, please share what you know with investigators.
