On the evening of May 12, 2024, 64-year-old Michael Smith was shot and killed in his Long Meadow Drive home in Loris, South Carolina. Horry County Police found him in his bedroom with a gunshot wound to his upper right chest; a black handgun was recovered near his body.
The 911 call came from his 63-year-old wife, Laura Ann Smith, who was waiting outside when officers arrived. Arrest warrants allege the couple had been arguing about their finances and that Laura Smith shot Michael Smith twice in the torso with a revolver. Laura Ann Smith was arrested at the scene and booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center; the investigation is ongoing.
Neighbors said they had seen the couple earlier that day and were shocked, describing them as having appeared happy. Does anyone in Loris have information about the Smiths or about what led to the dispute that night?
