A routine afternoon at Florence’s Magnolia Mall on February 18, 2024, ended in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Avery S. McDonald. The Latta High School student was in a vehicle in the mall parking lot when two masked people approached; at least one opened fire around 3 p.m. A Florence County Sheriff’s deputy arrived first and rendered aid before Avery was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Avery is remembered as kind and funny and had a twin brother.
Investigators say the shooting occurred during a targeted robbery attempt. Law enforcement arrested two 18-year-olds, Javon Norman and Demarcus Legette, and an unidentified 15-year-old; all were charged with murder and armed robbery. Officials report the suspects fled in a gold Ford Escape, later located with the help of surveillance footage and public tips. The 15-year-old is held at the Department of Juvenile Justice; both Norman and Legette were denied bond. Avery’s family has filed a wrongful death suit against the mall’s parent company alleging inadequate security.
If anyone witnessed the parking lot scene, surveillance around the mall that day, or knew Avery’s routines, please share information with the Florence Police Department.
