On the morning of December 20, 2023, Berkeley County deputies found 15-year-old Jose Manuel Nieto Jr. fatally shot inside a mobile home at the Summer Creek Mobile Home Park in Summerville, South Carolina. Nearby in the roadway lay 21-year-old Ismael A. Rodriguez of Goose Creek, also dead from gunshot wounds. Authorities described both deaths as part of an active double homicide investigation and had not announced any arrests at the time.

Jose lived in North Charleston and was a freshman at Goose Creek High School. Family and friends remember him for his infectious smile, jokester personality, and interests in fashion, music (both listening and creating), sports cars, dining out, and the beach. He is survived by his parents, Elvia Chavez and Jose Nieto Sr., a sister, his girlfriend, and other close family and friends. Visitation was held on December 26, 2023, with Mass and burial following on December 27.
