On the afternoon of Thursday, November 2, 2023, 30-year-old Tyler Justin Wimbush was found fatally shot by the roadside on Allen Road on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Deputies had been called about a reckless driver on Marshland Road around 5:50 p.m., followed shortly by reports of gunfire. Wimbush was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:07 p.m., and his death was ruled a homicide. His dog, Kharisma, also suffered a gunshot wound but survived and was returned to Wimbush’s girlfriend after veterinary care.

A native of Durham County, North Carolina, Wimbush was an Army combat veteran who served two tours in Afghanistan and was honorably discharged in 2015 after being injured. His family says he fathered a daughter and had been working for Federal Express while on probation after a series of drug charges beginning in 2018; they also describe him as disciplined and loving despite past mistakes. As of the initial reports, the shooter remained at large and reports of reckless driving appear linked to the shooting. If anyone has information about what happened on Allen Road that evening, please come forward.
