Jatavious K. Harris, 20, was shot and killed inside his Batesburg, South Carolina, home on Old 96 Indian Trail in the early morning of July 17, 2023. At about 1:00 a.m., multiple gunshots were fired from the roadway into the residence. First responders found Harris unresponsive on the floor with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy confirmed the gunshot as the cause of death.

Initial investigation by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office treated the incident as a drive-by shooting. Five other people were in the house at the time; none were physically injured but investigators later charged the suspect with five counts of attempted murder for their endangerment. On October 12, 2023, authorities arrested 18-year-old J’Quan Kentrall Bowers of Monetta and charged him with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and five counts of attempted murder. He was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center without bond.
