On the night of June 27, 2023, 36-year-old Brandon Lee Simmons was found shot dead in the driver’s seat of a car stopped in the middle of Harbor Breeze Drive on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina. Authorities arrived about 11:50 p.m.; Simmons, a resident of the island and native of the Grays Hill community, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office later identified a suspect and in early September 2023 publicly named 19-year-old Mekhi Jeremiah Moultrie of St. Helena Island. Arrest warrants were issued charging Moultrie with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. Law enforcement asked the public for help locating him and described him as believed to be armed and dangerous. The investigation remains ongoing.
