A Memorial Day block party in Hollywood, South Carolina, turned deadly when gunfire erupted on the evening of May 29, 2023. Twenty-two-year-old Deshawn M. Stephens of North Charleston was at the gathering near Storage Road and Church Hill Road when more than 100 rounds were fired from at least 13 different firearms, including rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Stephens sought shelter inside a vehicle but was fatally struck and died at the scene.

Five other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office arrived just before 10 p.m. and describes the scene as chaotic. Despite numerous witnesses, investigators say the case has faced challenges; no arrests or publicly named suspects have been announced and authorities have appealed to the community for help.
