Shortly after 1 a.m. on February 7, 2023, deputies answered reports of shots fired at a home on Marsh Lane in Jenkinsville, a community near Winnsboro, South Carolina. Inside the residence they found two young men who had been fatally shot. One victim was identified as Malik Butler, a 22-year-old Black man from Jenkinsville; the other was 23-year-old Theron Byrd of Winnsboro. Both had played football at Fairfield Central High School.
The scene was treated as a double homicide and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division crime scene unit assisted the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office. On March 2, 2023, authorities arrested 20-year-old Caleb Beryl Davis in connection with the killings; Davis was already jailed on an unrelated charge when the murder charges were filed. Reports also say Davis had been out on bond on a prior murder charge at the time of the double homicide. No motive has been made public.
Did anyone in Jenkinsville or Fairfield County have information about Butler, Byrd, or the night of February 7 that could help explain what happened?
