In the early hours of February 7, 2023, deputies in Winnsboro, South Carolina, found two men shot to death inside a Marsh Lane residence. Victims were 23-year-old Theron Byrd and 22-year-old Malik Butler, former Fairfield Central High School football teammates. Authorities described the killings as a senseless tragedy and opened a homicide investigation.
Investigators later identified 20-year-old Caleb Beryl Davis as a suspect; less than a month after the bodies were found he was arrested and charged with both murders and two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime. At the time of that arrest Davis was already in the Fairfield County Detention Center on unrelated charges from February 24, and he had previously been out on bond on a February 2021 murder charge. The motive has not been publicly disclosed. Theron’s father said his son had been spending the night at his friend’s house when both were shot in their sleep and that a neighbor and longtime acquaintance is accused of the crime, which also involved robbery.
If anyone knew Theron or Malik, or has information about what happened on Marsh Lane that night, please share what you know with investigators.
