Hyungjoon Choi, 31, was working out at the Gold's Gym in Reston, Virginia, when a gunman walked up and shot him around 1:13 p.m. on August 20, 2024. A bystander tried to help, but he died at the hospital.
What stands out is how fast this case came together, and why. The suspect, 43-year-old Steve Taehee Ha of Chantilly, had signed in at the front desk as a guest that day with his name and address. He ran off on foot, and police with K9 units and a helicopter had him in custody within eight hours. He's charged with second-degree murder and a firearm count and is being held without bond.
Police have said the shooting was targeted, not random, and that both men were gym members, but no motive has been released. That's the open question here: what connected them? If you know anything about the history between these two, the Fairfax County investigation is still working on it.
