Darnell L. Coleman, a 20-year-old Black man from Portsmouth, was shot and killed just after 1 a.m. on April 23, 2024, outside the Aspen Apartments in the 700 block of Match Point Drive in Virginia Beach. Officers and emergency crews found him with gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Neighbors reported hearing a burst of shots—some mistook the noise for fireworks—and residents described a heavy police presence and flashing lights as the area was secured.
Police treated the incident as an active homicide investigation but in the initial days released no clear account of what led up to the shooting, no confirmed motive, and no named suspect. Authorities asked anyone who might have seen or heard anything around that hour to contact the regional Crime Line. A viewing for Coleman was held May 10, 2024, at Metropolitan Funeral Service in Portsmouth, with a service the following morning.
If anyone who knew Darnell or observed activity near Match Point Drive that night has information, please come forward to investigators.
