On the evening of Friday, March 29, 2024, a dispute on the 700 block of Cedar Point Road in Heathsville, Virginia, ended with the shooting death of 41-year-old Seth Dutton. Northumberland County Sheriff’s deputies and EMS found Dutton with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies arrested 21-year-old Bobby Ray Landman of Lottsburg at about 10 p.m. Landman was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and was held without bond at the Northern Neck Regional Jail. At a bond hearing on April 8, the defense said Landman fired in self-defense after Dutton allegedly pointed a gun at Landman’s fiancée, claimed Dutton later lunged and struck Landman, and said Landman shot believing Dutton was reaching for a weapon. The Commonwealth’s Attorney disputed that account, saying Landman was armed, had been drinking, called out the victim, fired shots after being told to go home, and shot an unarmed man; the judge denied bond, citing concerns about alcohol, judgment, and risk to the community.
Are there witnesses or surveillance cameras in the Cedar Point Road area who can clarify what happened that night?
