Carroll F. Mack, 62, was shot and killed in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the afternoon of February 9, 2024. A Lynchburg native and Heritage High School graduate who served three years in the U.S. Marine Corps, Mack later operated a taxi for Allied Cab. Police and medics rendered aid at the 2600 block of Morson Street after gunfire was reported at about 3:30 p.m., and he was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital where he died of his injuries.
Witnesses and surveillance video identified a slim Black man in a blue jacket and blue jeans as the shooter. Video captured Mack’s cab arriving, Mack asking the man to exit and urging him to put a gun away, then a struggle and a gunshot heard off-camera. Witnesses said the man left carrying a duffel bag. Police arrested 34-year-old Dabney Thomas Jr. at a Wards Road gas station and charged him with second-degree murder and related firearm offenses. Thomas pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony under a plea agreement and faces up to 43 years; sentencing is set for December.
Anyone who has information about Mack, his movements that day, or the events on Morson Street is asked to come forward.
