On Tuesday, May 23, 2023, 16-year-old Sean Shewey was fatally shot while walking to a local store in Jarratt, Virginia, with his sister and her fiancé. Gunfire erupted in the neighborhood; Sean was struck and pronounced dead, and his sister was also wounded and airlifted to a Richmond trauma center before being released. Witnesses reported hearing two shots and seeing the victims fall.
Sean, a Greensville County High School freshman and track team member, was remembered by friends and community members as a quiet, helpful young man preparing for the coming school year. Authorities say the suspect is a 17-year-old honor student who lived across the street and attended the same high school; because of his age he has not been publicly identified. The suspect was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm causing injury; investigators identified the weapon as a rifle. The motive has not been released.
If anyone who knew Sean or witnessed the shooting has information that could help investigators, please come forward.
