Javier Gomez, a 20-year-old Hispanic man, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of March 25, 2023, inside his Fairfax Village Apartments unit on Viera Lane in Fairfax, Virginia. Gomez and an acquaintance, 18-year-old Darren Cruz Colindres, had been together in the apartment since the previous night, playing video games and drinking heavily. A family member who had been asleep in another room was awakened by a gunshot and found Gomez on the living room floor with an upper-body gunshot wound, and saw Cruz Colindres fleeing the scene. Gomez was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.
Police identified Cruz Colindres as the suspect and located him within hours at a home in McLean; he was taken into custody. The firearm used was not immediately recovered at the apartment. Court filings and the sentencing report state the two had been greatly intoxicated and a brief argument preceded the shooting, and the defense described the death as the result of intoxication and recklessness after Cruz Colindres brought a gun to the apartment without malicious intent.
Did anyone nearby see or hear anything that night at Fairfax Village Apartments that could add detail about what happened?
