On the evening of February 21, 2023, shots were reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the Timberland Apartments parking lot in Charlottesville, Virginia. Officers found 34-year-old Charlottesville resident Joshua Lamont Jones with a gunshot wound; he was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center and pronounced dead.

The Albemarle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division worked the case for about 600 days. Investigators say they believe Jones was not the intended target and did not know his assailants. In October 2024 a grand jury returned indictments charging 22-year-olds Torius Jihad Price and Taquarius Olando Catoe-Anderson with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Price was already incarcerated on unrelated drug charges when arrested on the new counts.

Investigators also tied a third person, identified as Justice Kilel, to the homicide; Kilel was killed himself in March 2023 at the SunShine Mini Mart on Cherry Avenue and was never charged in Jones’s death. Catoe-Anderson was scheduled for a court appearance in Albemarle County Circuit Court on December 2nd. Does anyone have information about Joshua’s movements that night or about the people named in the investigation?
