On January 30, 2023, 25-year-old Destiny Layton was shot at an apartment complex on Salisbury Way in Hampton, Virginia. Layton, who was eight months pregnant, suffered life-threatening injuries and later died at a local hospital; her unborn daughter, later named Si’Mora Destini Layton-Nash by family, also died. A 24-year-old man, Dijonte Nash, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Layton was a mother of four children ages seven or younger and a Phoebus High School graduate who had been a cheerleader. Family members remember her as joyous, vibrant, and caring; her mother, Alissa Hendry, described her as having a big heart. The deaths have deeply affected the family and the Hampton community.
The Hampton Police Department opened an investigation, but more than a year after the shooting no arrests had been announced and no suspects or motive were publicly identified. Anyone with information that could help bring answers to the families is asked to come forward.
