Monica Mosley, 51, was a veteran detective sergeant with the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office and a long-time Bridgeton resident. A mother and grandmother who began at the prosecutor’s office as a paralegal in 2006 and became a detective in 2009, she was described as a constant friend and role model in her workplace and community.

On the night of October 15, 2024, several people forced entry into her Buckshutem Road home at about 10:30 p.m. Prosecutors say a gunfight broke out inside; Mosley fired three rounds from her service weapon and struck one intruder. The attackers shot her in the knee and wrist and one of them fatally shot her in the back of the head.

Investigators developed a person of interest after locating a man at a Camden hospital with a gunshot wound; cellphone data and surveillance video later led to arrests. By early November 2024 five people were in custody. Four men — Nyshawn Mutcherson, Jarred D. Brown, Richard B. Hawkins Willis, and Byron Thomas — were charged in connection with the killing, and Cyndia E. Pimentel was arrested on allegations of driving a vehicle used in the crime and helping discard evidence. The four men were indicted on first-degree murder and related counts; Pimentel was indicted on hindering, obstruction and tampering charges. Prosecutors were continuing to build the case and the defendants remained pending trial.
