On the afternoon of April 16, 2024, 24-year-old Nasir Tart of Clementon was shot and killed in the LaCascata townhome development in Gloucester Township, New Jersey. Surveillance footage shows Tart, who was with a small group, had an earlier encounter at a Sunoco on Blackwood-Clementon Road with 21-year-old Hasan Battie; Tart and his companions left in a white Jeep while Battie remained nearby and walked toward LaCascata. Minutes later the Jeep entered the complex and the two men met again. Court documents say an altercation escalated into a chase and Battie fired a handgun, striking Tart near one of the buildings. Police were dispatched about 5:27 p.m.; emergency responders pronounced Tart dead at the scene at 5:50 p.m.
On April 22, 2024, Battie was arrested in Camden by the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was held at the Camden County Correctional Facility pending a pretrial detention hearing. The motive has not been released.
If anyone has information about the encounter at the Sunoco or what led to the confrontation in LaCascata, please share what is known.
