On the morning of August 12, 2023, 27-year-old Jameer Selx Outsey was found with a gunshot wound at the intersection of North Broad Street and Magnolia Avenue in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Officers responding to reports of a shooting located Outsey at the scene; he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Outsey, a Bridgewater resident, was a former standout football player who graduated from Franklin Township High School in 2014 and played college football at the University of Iowa and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While at UNLV he appeared in 24 games across the 2017 and 2018 seasons and earned recognition for academic achievements.

Investigators identified Maurice Pierce, then 23 and from Plainfield, in connection with the shooting; Pierce surrendered to the Elizabeth Police Department in late September 2023 and was arrested on charges including first-degree murder and weapons offenses.
