On the evening of April 13, 2024, a violent altercation at Wilbur Young Park in Blue Springs, Missouri, ended with gunfire that killed 20-year-old Karmello Matlock. Officers were called to 1100 Southeast Adams Dairy Parkway just after 10:30 p.m. following reports of shots fired. Investigators found two shooting victims at different locations in the park; one was in a parking lot near the volleyball courts and Karmello was near a basketball court. Emergency crews took Karmello to CenterPoint Medical Center in Independence, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the incident began as a fistfight among a group at the park and escalated when firearms were introduced. Surveillance footage reviewed by detectives reportedly captured the sequence of events. Alongside Karmello, 19-year-old LaDronal Hamilton Jr. was also killed and a 17-year-old male suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Karmello, known as Mello, was a Blue Springs resident who graduated from Blue Springs High School in 2022 and was studying Business Management at Kansas City Kansas Community College. His family described him as quiet yet vibrant, a basketball lover and a kind-hearted presence.
