On the night of September 30, 2023, an argument between two groups at the QuikTrip at 7400 North Lindbergh Boulevard in Hazelwood, Missouri, turned to gunfire. Charles Carbon IV, an 18-year-old Black male from north St. Louis County, was a passenger in a black Acura that had just pulled into the gas station when a red Dodge Avenger arrived and three people inside began shooting. Charles was struck by a gunshot; another person associated with him suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Hazelwood Police officers found Charles inside the vehicle and provided life-saving efforts until he was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The Hazelwood Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Team identified two alleged shooters as JaQuan M. Clarett and Dakota Shelton. Clarett was arrested in November 2023 and later indicted on second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. Shelton, who was a juvenile at the time of the shooting, was later certified to stand trial as an adult and formally charged with the same counts; bond was set at $500,000 cash-only.
Both Clarett and Shelton remained in custody awaiting trial as of late November 2024. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the Hazelwood Police Department at 314-838-5000. Have details about that night or the people involved that could help the investigation?
