Juavvion L. Bagsby, 29, was shot and killed on September 29, 2023, near his home in Independence, Missouri, after coming to the aid of his wife and two young children. Earlier that evening, the accused, 28-year-old Tyler Rizer of Blue Springs, allegedly stabbed a man who had given him a ride, fled across Interstate 70 and into a nearby neighborhood, and assaulted Bagsby’s wife and children in their yard. Turner called her husband, who returned home and confronted the suspect; during the confrontation Bagsby was shot and died at the scene. The suspect then allegedly stole Bagsby’s car and fled, later being taken into custody in Kansas City following a crash and an attempted carjacking.
An amended complaint in Jackson County court formally charges Rizer with second-degree murder of Juavvion Bagsby along with multiple counts including armed criminal action, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, stealing, leaving the scene of an accident, and vehicle hijacking. Bagsby is remembered by his family as a devoted husband and the father of three young boys who died protecting them.
Does anyone in the Independence or Blue Springs area have information about the events of that night or knew the Bagsby family?
