On the night of August 11, 2023, 27-year-old Shieer Leggett was found in the middle of the intersection of Main and Schuyler streets in Cohoes, New York, suffering life-threatening gunshot injuries. Officers and medics attempted resuscitation and he was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he later died. The shooting followed a verbal confrontation that escalated into a chaotic exchange of gunfire involving a group of eight to ten people; it was Cohoes’ first homicide in three years.
The investigation initially targeted Dontie Mitchell, 43, of Albany, who was indicted by an Albany County grand jury on second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and weapon charges amid allegations he fired the fatal shot. Review of surveillance footage and subsequent proceedings led a judge in December 2023 to dismiss the murder and reckless endangerment charges against Mitchell for insufficient evidence and a grand jury instruction issue; he was later convicted on a felony weapons charge related to the incident.
Attention then shifted to 25-year-old Nalik Sealy of South Carolina. Sealy admitted he fired the shot that killed his friend, saying he intervened in an argument, and later pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon; he was sentenced to 5 to 15 years in state prison. Does anyone have further information about the people involved that could help clarify what happened that night?
