On April 12, 2023, 15-year-old Preston Gamble was killed after a fight between two groups at the Calverton Hills condominium complex in Calverton, New York. What began as a fistfight turned deadly when gunfire erupted around 3:55 p.m. on Hill Circle. Preston, a Riverhead High School student who enjoyed basketball, football, and wrestling, was struck by a bullet and taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead.

Suffolk County Police homicide detectives opened an immediate investigation. A year after the shooting there has been no arrest; authorities have said they have a suspect in mind but have not released a name. Preston’s parents, Charles Gamble and Chakara Jones, and his siblings, including a stepbrother who witnessed the shooting, have been mourning and holding vigils while the case remains active.
