On August 10, 2024, at about 11:06 a.m., deputies from the Craven County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting at 564 Clark Road in Vanceboro and found 45-year-old David Antwan Jenkins with gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Jenkins dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified 65-year-old neighbor Orlando Mayhew Campbell, who lived at 578 Clark Road, as the primary suspect. Campbell was arrested, charged with an open count of murder, and held without bond at the Craven County Detention Facility pending his initial court appearance. The motive for the shooting has not been released and the sheriff’s office continues to investigate.
Funeral services for Jenkins were held August 18, 2024, at the Overflow Worship Center in Vanceboro, with interment at the Roberson Family Cemetery. Anyone with information about what led to this shooting is asked to come forward.
