On May 12, 2024, at about 1:26 p.m., officers from the Jacksonville Police Department responded to a reported shooting at Windsor Place Apartments, 4679 Western Boulevard in Jacksonville, North Carolina. They found 19-year-old Terrance Tyquawn Grant of Maysville with a fatal gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The next day, May 13, 2024, 19-year-old Jonathan Lee Mills Jr. was arrested and charged with an open count of murder in connection with the shooting. Investigators described the incident as isolated and said there was no continuing threat to the public, but they continued to seek information to clarify the circumstances.
