On January 3, 2024, 19-year-old Kalib Mekhi Bostick of Jacksonville, North Carolina, was killed in a shooting outside 53 Mini Mart and Tobacco at 3458 Burgaw Highway at about 5:19 p.m. The same incident also killed 18-year-old Christian Peterson and wounded a third person, who was taken to Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune in stable condition. Deputies found one victim in the parking lot and another inside a vehicle.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office says the encounter began as a drug deal that turned into a robbery. Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, including one reported stolen. Authorities arrested 20-year-old Wali Shamiere Johnson of Hubert and charged him with murder, robbery with firearms, and conspiracy to commit robbery; a 17-year-old male was later taken into secured custody on similar charges. Sheriff Chris Thomas described the incident as apparently isolated, with witnesses cooperating and the possibility of additional arrests.
Funeral arrangements for Kalib Bostick were handled by Adams Funeral Services; a public viewing was held January 16, 2024, with a celebration of life on January 17 at St. Mary’s Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, and burial at Woodville Cemetery.
