On September 30, 2023, in Banner Elk, North Carolina, 51-year-old Michael Andrew Houser was fatally shot during an altercation with his neighbor, Brenden James Smith, an off-duty detention officer with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office. The confrontation began after a deer Smith shot while bow hunting crossed onto Houser’s property; the dispute escalated into a physical fight and ended when Smith shot Houser. Houser was pronounced dead at the scene. Smith remained and gave his account to responding deputies and was placed on administrative leave while the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation continues to investigate. No charges had been filed as of the latest update.
Houser was a native of Avery County, known for building and mechanical skills, and for enjoying fishing and family time. He is survived by his life partner, children, grandchildren, and siblings; his ashes are to be scattered at his favorite fishing spots with a private family gathering planned. If anyone witnessed the confrontation on Teaster Valley Lane or has information about the events that night, please come forward.
