On September 2, 2023, in West Asheville, North Carolina, 37-year-old Ismael Muñoz was shot and killed at his residence on East Oakview Road. Muñoz and a roommate were home when an individual approached with a metal pipe; as Muñoz tried to close a wooden door the assailant fired multiple shots through it. Muñoz suffered gunshot wounds to the head, chest, left arm, and leg, plus blunt trauma including a chin laceration, and died before EMS could transport him to hospital.
Evidence at the scene led detectives to identify 47-year-old Arturo Cordero Martinez as the suspect. Martinez fled the state in a 2001 Ford Mustang with Tennessee plates but was captured later that evening on Interstate 64 near Ferdinand, Indiana. At arrest he had a black Taurus 9mm pistol, a spent 9mm cartridge, brass knuckles and a small bag that tested positive for cocaine. Martinez was extradited to North Carolina and charged with first-degree murder; he was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Facility without bond and had an initial court appearance set for September 15, 2023. Investigators have not disclosed a motive or the nature of the relationship between Muñoz and Martinez.
Did anyone in the Asheville area see or hear anything around East Oakview Road on September 2 that could help investigators?
